Where the scan money actually goes
The quoted price of a scan is rarely the real price. Photogrammetry produces a dense, messy mesh with baked-together geometry — before it is usable in a store scene it needs cleanup, retopology and often re-texturing, which is skilled 3D work billed by the hour. Add the logistics: shipping the physical product to a vendor or booking studio time, then waiting days for delivery. For one hero product, that can be worth it. Across a 40-piece seasonal range, it rarely is.
What AI generation honestly can't do
An AI model is reconstructed from a photograph, so it is a likeness, not a measurement. It will not give you sub-millimetre accuracy, and fine details like stitching or engraved logos may soften. If your deliverable is engineering documentation or a fixture that has to physically fit, scan it. If your deliverable is a client-facing visual — a store layout, a VM concept, a pitch deck — the likeness reads perfectly at presentation distance, and the mesh arrives already clean, textured and light enough to duplicate across a whole floor plan.
The hybrid approach most teams land on
This is not really an either/or. The pattern that works: scan the two or three products where accuracy is the point, and generate everything else. Both drop into the same Rhino, SketchUp or 3ds Max scene. Your scan budget goes where it earns its keep, and the rest of the range costs a few dollars an item instead of a few hundred.
